"He's really strong,…"  Acadiu wearily wiped his forehead, slumped forward under the weight of battle.  The other dice stayed back, waiting for Saign to call them.  This was the time that they had after every battle, which was respected as private.  He fell forward more, then dropped to his knees. "Acadiu,…  you did well."  Saign lifted his head to face her. "I lost."  Acadiu couldn't bear to open his eyes.  He didn't want to see the disappointment in Saign's face. She wasn't upset.  Saign wrapped her arms around Acadiu's head, something which the rest of her team watched with slight surprise.  "For the first and only time.  I'm,.. not going to lose you.  I won't see you fight again like that.  Is that understood?" "But, I must earn-"  Acadiu protested. "No, not anymore." "I want to be useful,.. don't fire me!"  Acadiu wasn't fully catching on. "Don't be thick, Acadiu.  We're going home now so you can rest." "Saign?"  Acadiu looked up at her, "I did it for you.  Do what you want with me, but I did it for you." "Acadiu, you're not getting fired,"  Saign scowled, "Where would you even get that idea?  You know I'm not like the others.  I've never traded one of you, even that slouch Torbian stays.  He's useless, but I keep him.  If I keep him,… why do you think I'd throw away the one I love?" "I didn't succeed." "That doesn't matter,"  snapped Saign, then she softened sympathetically, "I don't keep you around because of how good you are.  I keep you around because I would miss you if you were gone and I care about what happens to you.  I would not see you getting used and worn out against your will… now, stand up and let's go home."  She beckoned to the rest of her dice to help Acadiu up so they could leave.  "I love you, Acadiu."

  1. Now, ain’t that just sweet like sugar.

*Ahem*, she sure let the fight go on for a really long time, these things considered…I guess she went into immediate shock, when Lexx turned the tables so rapidly.

But yeah…he’s happy…now that statement makes a whole lot of sense. Only Lexx isn’t around to learn of that sense.

Though I wouldn’t be surprised if one of his dice would tell him about it later.

  2. It may just be me, but this comes across as slightly… Too little too late to redeem her. Saign had to be reminded that she promised not to force them to fight to the death. Even then, she only barely intervened in time, despite having promised never to put them in that situation to begin with.

There’s also no indication that she’s not just as insufferable as she’s been shown to be after this touching moment. She may forcefully recruit more dice who hate fighting, and if, like Lex, they refuse to fight, she may open a breeding contract for them with the ADC.

There’s no reason to think that she’s had a big change of heart. She’s just apologizing for doing it this time, reaffirming that it had better be his one and only loss. Considering that his loss was against the great Lexx, I don’t really think that will be a serious black mark on his record.

I love the comic, I just really hate this woman. But hey, it’s good to know there are some real villains in the comic, besides just Trasik. Also, kudos. It’s rare that I see an actual villain with depth that I don’t like or think is amusing or funny.

Now, if she was played by Tim Curry, that would be a different matter.

  3. Wow. You almost let him die. That just makes it colder. But… this after the battle part is very sweet. So conflicted. I don’t like her, but I no longer hate her.

  4. Why was Acadiu so convinced that he would be fired, if she never fires anyone? I still smell some brainwashing around here somewhere. Maybe someone in the ACD secretly got to Acadiu to ensure the outcome would be lethal, one way or the other. If Lexx had had to kill his old Academy friend, that would have messed him up pretty badly.

    1. For that matter, why did Saign take so long to stop the fight and almost let someone she professes to love die? Maybe she’s gotten brainwashed somehow, too. The ACD can be pretty damned ruthless.

      1. Nope, just caught up in her self righteous quest. Those kinds of things can be very blinding to reality until it’s too late – which thankfully it wasn’t.

    2. It’s more of a non communication issue. It never came up on conversation because Saign would never consider it, but Acadiu did not know that. He was just overjoyed and so grateful to have someone who treated him well he just wanted to please her.

      1. Ah, okay. You should know. 😎

        1. I hope I’d know! 😀

  5. See, I don’t like Saign, and I don’t approve of what she tried to do to Lexx, but she’s an interesting character (and weirdly, I think I like her better than Claudia, even though I agreed more with what Claudia said when they were bickering)
