Lexx stared at the dark blue ceiling of the living area. The light had been out for a full hour. Chel had gone to bed several hours before that. He had reluctantly laid out a small sleeping pad, a pillow and his blanket into a makeshift bed. Now, he was awake and finding it hard to combat his racing thoughts and sleep. He didn’t want to sleep, but knew he needed to. ‘At least the wings don’t ache as much now,…’ Lexx flexed the tips of the wings not covered by the blanket. The muscles were not full formed in the still regenerating right wing, but its form was almost complete. ‘I hate sleeping on my stomach.’ Lexx inhaled deeply. ‘I need to get back in the game tomorrow. I’m making excuses because I like how Chel’s been treating me. Why shouldn’t I?’ He shifted restlessly. ‘I’m a mature adult male Rishan,.. a man and she,… is a woman. A beautiful kind young woman who lives on Earth,….’ The thoughts shifted abruptly. ‘Whose life is there.’ It was there. Lexx considered. He was no longer questioning himself, at least not for the moment. The problem was, it couldn’t be rushed. Riley was right. Things would have to happen as they would and the last thing Lexx wanted was to do something that would interrupt the timing. Then, reality set in again. He was jumping ahead of himself. He had to concentrate on the game and unless he won, it didn’t matter what he thought. He had to remember that this wasn’t just about him. It could hurt Chel. The very things he was worried about being done to him, could happen to her. He would not be responsible for someone else’s scars. ‘I will not spoil her life with my desires, not like what was done to me. She deserves a secure life. I could never give that to her,… could I?’ What was the harm in dreaming? He rarely allowed himself the privilege of wandering thoughts. But now, what would life be like? When he won? He would go to his island and invite Chel to join him. They could really get to know each other and take their time without the stress of the game. Lexx wouldn’t mind. Just being around her lifted his spirits. As he imagined it, sleep gradually overtook him. Several hours later, the Rift remained in orbit as silent as its sleeping occupants. Another ship had begun to approach, this one fancier in design, but much smaller. It slowed considerably, pulling up into a similar orbit near the Rift. Onboard, a single being unstrapped from her chair and breathed a sigh of contentment. “Whew,.. this ship is great! Completely undetectable. Nobody knows where I am,.. heehee,..” She giggled, taking a step back to the transport door. She’d have the coordinates set to the Rift in a moment, then be on board. The other nice thing about this ship. It had one of the newest transport doors. “Lexx is going to be so surprised!”

  1. I’m guessing it’s Claudia.

    1. And I’m guessing that whoever it is has found out how to disable the nanites.

      Don’t drink anything, Lexx!
