Chel thought back to the events that had led up to where she was now. "One moment I'm talking to Mauki —" She remembered that she was telling Mauki what Riley had done. It was a relief to tell someone about the nanites and his 'jokes' which had seriously disturbed her. She remembered seeing Damian take the box from Mauki that contained Riley's gift to her. Vaguely, she remembered something that sounded a lot like tissue paper being pushed aside.
Then, she recalled, Damian had grabbed her around the waist abruptly and said something in another language to Mauki that suspiciously sounded like a swear. For a moment she wondered what Mauki had done, but he didn't react to it with anything more than a look of surprise. "The next, Damian's kidnapping me!"
