Lexx’s pessimistic side spoke loudly, his body tensing up in thought. ‘There’s a catch,… I know it’s coming. This is too good to be true. What is the cost? Would it be worth it?’ He held himself expressionless to the darkness. He would not show any weakness to them. This was the best way and he was well practiced at it. Inside, he was screaming. Why did they do this to him? Did they take some pleasure in his situation? Suddenly, the weariness hit Lexx. He was so tired. It was a weight that had grown almost too much for him to handle. There were so many times he just wanted to lay down and not get up. He returned to that place, remembering it all to well. Chel. Maenae. Riley. None of them could help him when he was alone. Once they were out of sight; Lexx was alone. This was why he hated letting anyone be a ‘friend’. They left. Why did he let Chel in? Just one more person he could not take with him. Maenae? She was just a little girl. When she grew up. She would leave too. Riley? He had his own life to lead. The littan would not be there forever, no matter how much he cared about Lexx. “And what do you get out of it?” Lexx forced the words, cutting through the avalanche of depression. “Your children.” The response caught Lexx even more off guard. “…” Lexx’s jaw dropped, then he swallowed and choked, “What do you mean?” What children? He didn’t have any. Were they talking about Maenae? Had they done something illegal that they were now trying to cover up and needed him to fix? “You are free to do as you want.” The more the contact avoided just telling him, the more a sick feeling began to fill Lexx’s stomach. “You can stay on that planet if that is what you desire, but we will expect you to report to us on a regular basis for DNA extraction for a period of ten years.” DNA extraction? Something told Lexx that wasn’t as simple as taking his blood. “It will be purely clinical. You will not see any of your progeny. Any child you father naturally during this time will also be immediately employed.” Naturally? Lexx scowled, narrowing his eyes. Naturally? This was not the usual way they did things. “At the end of ten years, you will be fully released from the ADC after disclosures are signed. You will be free and no longer a part of the game. Is your freedom worth ten years of painless donation?”

  1. No it’s not! Don’t do it!

  2. And you can get your firstborn back if you guess my name.

  3. Regular sperm donations — do you know how many sperm are in a single ejaculation? And they’ll be mixing the sperm with the egg harvests they get from some Rishan female(s), and they get to keep all children produced that way, PLUS any children you father naturally — like, say, with Chel? — in that ten year period?

Basically, is your freedom worth selling hundreds more children into the same hell you’re trying to escape from? God, I hope not. I can’t even call this a “Faustian bargain” because even Faust got a better deal than this.
