“Dad!” Chel laughed. “That’s ridiculous!” “You say so now, but tell me, what happens in every scenario?” The conversation turned decidedly more serious than Chel thought it was and her smile faded quickly. “There are not any happy endings.” Her father turned to the door, giving his daughter one last look as he ended the conversation. “And the ‘hero’ never retires.” Chel stared down at her blanket in thought, wondering over exactly what her father meant. She’d seen enough movies and read enough comic books in passing to get a general idea of what he was saying, but how did that really apply to Lexx? He wasn’t a hero. He was a victim. He would stop fighting and that would be it, right? Chel slid down under the light cover and stared up at the ceiling in thought. She could hear Sirius settling on the floor on one side of her and then Serenity leaped onto the bed and stretched out over the foot of it.

  1. He isn’t a hero, he’s a pawn in a game, it’s not the same. Chel looks so sad though.

    1. To keep with the Advengers comparison and other similar comic characters- a good number of comic ‘heros’ are not heros either and are also pawns in some cases. They don’t get happy endings. So it does work in away. Maybe not correctly, but it works.

  2. That’s right crush your daughters feelings and dreams.

    1. It is the responsible thing for a parent to do in this scenario. There is always hope of course, and Chel should by all means strive for the happy ending. But she also needs to keep her head out of the clouds or she is liable to lose everything.

  3. Well I think part of the issue is Lexx doesnt even know what Lexx is post alien-dice. Ok you win, no more contract — now what?

    1. Lexx has said as much himself. All he knows is the cruel life of the Game. He’s no hero though. If he were, there might be more light at the end of the tunnel.

  4. There was always Gargoyles

    1. Gargoyles was unusual as one could feel sympathy for the villain in addition the lines between good and evil was not that concrete.
Still the hero’s did what they did because it was the right thing to do.

I loved that show, too bad Disney ****** it.

      1. Did you ever read the large number of fan-made extra episodes at “the gargoyles saga?” I especially liked timedancer on that.

  5. As a young adult – just about every reality check is more grounding than you want to admit. Vic fully sees that Lexx’s life is not going to change. Even if he wins, he still has a lot of fighting in his future and Chel will never be safe in his presence.

    1. It’s a rather good point to from our perspective.

The owner of the ADC knows what a risk and mistake putting and keeping Lexx in the game is and that threat doesn’t disappear just because he leaves the game.

He’s a real threat and crucial witness and/or piece of evidence to all the cruel things they have done.

  6. What the ADC probably should have done quite a while ago was Banish Lexx to Earth in exchange for ending the contract.

  7. The hero never retires… but he DOES still get married and have a family on the side sometimes.

  8. Well, throw Spiderman in there why don’tcha?

  9. Sorry, gloomy dad, thats mostly in the modern retellings when angsty heroes make more money.
