“Only when they are starving.  They’re like giant vampire bats.”  Keith began explaining.  “Their saliva contains a powerful local anesthetic.  It’s concentrated in the roof of the mouth and delivered by retractable fangs.  Whatever they feed on never knows it.” Stealth would disagree.  Chel stared at the lumpy rain coat and remembered the bloody bandage that was on Stealth’s muzzle.  By the time they had left the house it was healed without a mark, but Stealth had still be complaining about it. “She sleeps in your bed, doesn’t she?”  Chel shivered at the thought. “Of course she does.”  Keith responded as though there was no other choice. “That is so gross.”  Chel stuck out her tongue. “Chalupa eats fruit, vegetables and fish.”  Keith pointed out again. “But she can.” “She does NOT drink blood.”

  1. Right, Keith. Your terror lizard is specifically adapted to drink blood but “only does it when she’s starving.” Because feeding on animals is so much easier than eating plants.

    1. Don’t be too upset. Blood would be a last resort for any omnivore. Blood is a very poor source of nutrients, and you would have to drink a lot to get the same amount of nutrition from, say, a bowl a fruit.

My beef is that it could do better by being an omnivore, and use that anaesthetic saliva to numb a large animal, rip its throat out, and then wait for it to stop kicking. Then it could feed on the larger animal at its leisure.

      1. Except that like the Littans she doesn’t seem to have teeth designed for tearing meat or grinding vegetables.

… Actually, that makes me think that perhaps Chupacabra are the result of a dice who’s first form originated on Litta and bred with something on earth.
