Chel stood in the ‘doorway’ for a moment, taking in the view. The land had been cleared here for a living area and vast fields of different colors. Trees rose all around these fields and divided them up into smaller fields until they were close to the living areas. She could see farming equipment moving in the distance in the fields and large industrial type buildings she supposed were used for storing them. The dark roofs surprised Chel, but after a moment wondering why, she concluded that they likely absorbed sunlight and converted it to energy.
She followed Caillem and the trio of hyper budgieotters down a steep hillside, noting that the streets themselves were vacant at the moment, but there were figures moving around some of the buildings.

And here we see the dormitories, produced in the style of the late 20th century “dentention center.” Note the pains-taking detail of the recreation – the siding/roof is real low grade aluminum – see where the corrosion has already begun to set in? Yes, those staying in these buildings can look forward to getting a truly realistic exprience here!
Ms. Ross – my cynisism…its growing…

Actually, I need to not jump to conclusions like that…this isn’t nearly that bad…and those may not be houses – apologize folks, I just had a gut reaction…And it made me comment recklessly.

One: Backgrounds are really hard. Most artists struggle with it.
Two: Syke’s art is not the greatest. Her forte is animals, not people… and especially not buildings. Some allowances need to be made for the things she’s weaker at until she gets better. And all artists get better as they continue to practice. She draws WAAAAY better than she did about ten years ago when this comic started. 🙂

‘Course it is – and I agree, she is better than her “Campus Safari” days – and…why are we arguing? I agree with everything you just said – though I think you might have overstated the buildings bit…she has done some solid designs over the course of her comics. Anyway –
I had a gut reaction to the type of building I assumed it was – and then realized I had very little evidence to go with the assumption, and apologized – I didn’t knock the nature of the background at any point. So…we good?

The suspense is starting to get to me.

Servant’s quarters or barracks…?
Lovely detail, Tiff. Of course you leave us with suspense on a Friday. x3 -plants herself to wait for Monday-

It could always be all for her “benefit.”
If Trasik’s idea is to wear Chel’s resolve down then having all of the buildings be recognizable to her subconscious works lots better than if they were all buildings filled with wonder and novelty even if they were for dark purposes.
I certainly wouldnt put it past Trasik to rapidly put up/change a small area of her planet to suit her purposes with Chel.

Welcome to Battery Town. A quiet little place with real activity charging through its interior. The people here are electrifying. It’s the perfect place if you feel worn down and need somewhere to recharge. Ok, I’m done. ^_^

This looks suspiciously like camp. A military camp.

agreed…although they could just be normal homes….yeah suspense!

I never did like quonset huts.

I do not think that if Chel has any sense left in her that this will end without vast amounts of swearing and pain for all involved parties, but maybe she has finally snapped and the dual possibilities of meeting supposedly dead grandparent people and/ or dozens of child slaves will have no effect on her whatsoever.

If Chel gets hold of a gun, Trasik is going to be in a lot of pain.

Actually, those cylindrical buildings look a lot like green-houses to me. If they are growing plants from other location on the planet or other planets, then that would explain the opaque roof. I do photosynthesis research and we often use large growth chambers for our plants, espacially making them sprout (some need exactly X-hr long days with Y amount of IR light to germinate). Given the garden we just saw, Trasik definitely needs to have at least one growth chamber to maintain that hedgemaze with fresh plants.

Definitely Quonset buildings. As a Federal agent brat, Chel would be painfully familiar with them even if she didn’t know about her parent’s “real” jobs. If Trasik hadn’t been so pissed off about the dice taking Chel for a walk, I would have agreed with the “calculated psychological oppression” angle.

AHHHH I finally caught up…. Nooooo….. I wanna read more

And here I thought they were for storage. >_>
Starcat5
Looks like large storage sheds to me. One can’t plow all those fields without a proper tractor analog, after all.
Ray
eh. They look like regular factory farm buildings to me.
