“Please stop being like this. I know you’re not a selfish person. You adopted me.” Zaile frowned as memories of his ‘adoption’ of Maelinn flashed through his mind. It had not been planned and had occurred purely by accident. The thought of Maelinn as a small child, dirty, emaciated and starving in a small corner shop that dealt in exotic goods. In a fit of anger, Zaile had purchased her freedom and would never forget the alien he had dealt with. That very evening the shop was taken over by the local government and its owner was sent to a penal colony for dealing in contraband items, including the sale of slaves. “You raised me.” Maelinn continued in a softer voice. “You did not teach me to be like this.” She finished with a single request. “Talk to Lexx.”
