"Look, Kip, I'm afraid of what I've gotten myself into," Chel stared at the little humanoid figure floating in front of her.  "I don't know what to do.  Nobody can help me.  I can't go to anyone!" "Just put the plate somewhere hidden," Kip advised. "What if someone finds it?  Then I have to explain where it came from… they might find-"  Chel trailed off, realizing what she was doing.  She was carrying on a conversation with something that wasn't even alive.  "Hey,.. you're not alive.  Why would you care if I break the plate?  You're just hardware." "Yes,"  shrugged Kip.  His eyes flickered from dark brown to a lighter shade, "But I still don't want to cease to exist!!  Please, there is not a need to break the plate."  He was very persistent and it was difficult to look at Kip and not see a life form.

  1. Well, and here it is once more, the ancient question, when ‘killing’ is not an act of cruelty. If a program is sentient, doesn’t it have just as much right to keep on existing, as a human does? I mean, after all, our bodies are nothing but machines as well, aren’t they?
