Day 24 Part 2

“Cute.” Damian let Riley go just as they became aware there was a third party observing them. Stealth was standing a few feet away, her tail tips twitching very slowly behind her and an amused look in her golden green eyes. “I want in on your plan, Riley. Chel is –my- owner.” “I don’t think you really know the meaning of that word.” Riley found another opportunity to roll his eyes. “I’m a cat.” Stealth sniffed disdainfully ruffling the short feathers on the tops of her wings. “I make up my own meanings.”

  1. That is so true! My kitten is proof of that! “If I do something naughty whilst looking cute, it is ok”. The colouring on Stealth is just lovely, well done!

  2. Yep. Them and doxins.

  3. 😀 IT’S SOOOO TRUE. Cats only do what you tell them when your loud and angry, because they know if they don’t they’ll be in a world of pain. But, that’s one of the things that makes cats better than dogs (dodges bricks from dog owners/lovers) they are intelligent. Dogs are about as smart as 3-year-olds. 😛 (dodges bricks again)

    1. I don’t take offense at that. My family has a dog for the sole reason that dogs ARE stupid. I love my baby, but if she were smart the things she does wouldn’t be cute anymore, they’d just make me mad. It’s just personal preference. Personally, i like both, i just know that cleaning out litter boxes makes me throw up due to past experiences.

    2. I think I take slight offense to that comment. I like cats cause of their independence, but a dog you can teach them several commands and they get the picture pretty quick what the order these command comes in. That and I think their ‘stupid’ antics are to make us less wary of them >.>;

      1. A dog smart enough to be trained is nothing. A good German Shepherd will train YOU.

    3. My old cat was not the sharpest knife in the drawer. I remember the time when he started throwing up sudsy vomits. Took us forever to figure out what was going on, until I found the bar of soap, with cat sized teeth-marks all over it. He was also terrified of kippers and ice cubes.

The dog, on the other hand, could do door knobs.

My current cat, however is sharp in many senses of the word.

    4. 😛 I recently got a cat and I’d like to argue to the contrary.
I had the be the one to learn when the cat tries to bite me it doesn’t want pet anymore. I can’t teach it to stay calm.
The one thing it did pick up almost immediately (after being shown once) was how a litter box worked.
My dog can tell me what he wants by stepping to certain parts of the house associated with the want. He’s even demanded a walk once or twice by standing next to the closet where we keep it.

Then again, we may have different ideas of what signifies intelligence. I know that dogs and humans have been living side-by-side for thousands of years, and they can pick up on gestures, tones, and eye movements that humans make. Cats… not as much time, can’t do it.

      1. Both of my cats understand hand gestures, tones and eye movements. Whether they choose to follow depends on their mood. And neither of my cats bite to tell me to stop petting them. (Unless the older one is in a really bad mood, then she gives warning.) They do indeed tell me if they want something by going where they want it and meowing. They come when they’re called 90% of the time, if they choose to. The same goes for nonverbal come heres. That goes for a kitten as well, who I did not teach such things to.

  4. Dogs are social critters. They’ll follow whatever existing rules they find. Cats are anti-social. They make their own rules.
And here we have Stealth lampshading her own felineness.

    1. I wouldn’t say ‘anti-social’ because that’s where the ‘independence’ comes into play.
I know the difference because…well…let’s just say we have a whole lot of cats and I have grown up around cats my whole life so far.
I love all our animals, dogs and cats alike.

    2. Only in some cases. I had two kittens from the same litter, Bella only came when she wanted food or “honored” me with some eh…well she let me pet her sometimes(wanna say attention, but she only did it cuz I shook the treat can). Whereas her sister Precious was alway’s somewhere on me, if not my back it would be my leg or my shoulder. Bandaids were a must during that time lol

  5. Oh, believe me, it’s not that cats are anti-social, it’s…oh…wait…I have meezers. They are the dogs of the cat world. My roommate’s been trying to “teach” Samkit to let him use him as a pillow [something I’m allowed to do]. Sam ain’t buying ’cause he knows I’m the only one he has to keep happy.

  6. What is a meezer? I think basenjis are the cats of the dog world, that is why I love them. But you can’t have a basenji if you aren’t home to keep an eye on it, so I have my wonderful, adorable kitties.

  7. Cat’s definition of “owner:” Something similar to eternal slave, but allowed to be uppity on occasion.

  8. Well, I’ve got to add my two bits. I have a bunch of little sibs, and they just love animals. The only problem is, cats don’t tend to like kids. We had a cat for a while, but she was very anti-social and decided not to bond. Now we have a pup who demands LOTS of attention, and we are more than happy to provide. Also, he listens well to commands. Cats must be difficult to train, I mean they listen as much as fish. Dogs might be stupid, but don’t three-year-olds learn too? Much more than the ‘oh-so-intelligent’ cats.

    1. We have one 11 year old cat who’s just like Stealth… and a 5 month old kitten who’s pretty much a dog. She’s very intelligent and affectionate.. and she’s an American Bobtail – look up the breed. They’re the dogs of the cat world, which I did not know when we picked her from the shelter. I also didn’t know that they are sought after pets… and .. she was in a PET SHELTER.
We have a super intelligent dog, a pembroke welsh corgi, but that kitten IS smarter than the dog (and the older cat)… why? Because she knows how to manipulate the other two animals and get them to do what she wants them to do. 😀 I like both types of animals, but despite what science might say, the average cat is smarter than the average dog. I’ve never seen a cat as dumb as a cocker spaniel. I’ve seen chickens smarter than a cocker spaniel. I really do NOT like cocker spaniels. Dumbest dog breed in the world. I know that not all animals are representative of their breeds… but yeah… cockers… *shudder*

      1. I used to have a Cockapoo. A Cocker / Poodle cross. Not the smartest, true, but smart enough to go to the door and bark when she needed to releave herself, and cute as a button. …well, at least until she went senile.

Now my sister’s Boston Terrier? Cute, smart, trainable, and still independent and inquisitive enough to EARN his name of Loki. *Sigh* We lost him to cancer a few years ago, and the memory is STILL bittersweet. God, I miss that dog.

      2. My brother feels the same way about chihuahuas, only it’s the size that bothers him (I also think it’s the way they shake and bounce when they bark).
Me and my brother feel the same way about BIG dogs, “Love ‘Em” (German Shepherds, Great Danes, etc.).

    2. Oh and you CAN train cats and they are easy to train if you are interesting to them. 😉 Arya, our new addition, allows herself to be carried around and put through the most horrible tortures that a seven year old can inflict on an animal – being dressed up, put to bed, etc… without a complaint. That is a laid back cat. I’ve never SEEN a cat that allows itself to be carried like a sack of potatos.

  9. I’ve never had a cat, but I’ve always had a dog. Dogs are intelligent, and very playful. Their nature is to naturally please their alpha. Cats, being solitary creatures, will choose who they want to be companions with. They have no alpha, or omega, and they don’t intend to become any more than just a companion. I love cats for their independent and fierce nature, but I also love dogs for their loyal-ness and gentleness. Cats and Dogs both alike have their moments.

And also, for everyone above, whether you like cat’s or dogs is irrelevant. They’ll always be there, whether you like it or not.

  10. Now I wonder what Stealth’s definition of owner is. Does Stealth/Mittens consider herself the owner of Chel or does Stealth/Mittens accept that Chel is her caretaker or is it something completely different.

  11. I think cats are difficult to train because they are intelligent. It’s just like my calculus class: everyone in that class is smart and knows that he or she is smart; therefore, we all act a bit obnoxious. It’s a little counterintuitive, but it works. >.<

  12. Extremely late, but to the person who asked, a meezer is a nickname given to Siamese cats. It’s a handy way to identify Siamese fanatics, actually.

Samkit never comes when I ask, but he’s always there when I need him. 😉

  13. Only need three words to describe this page … Best. Excuse. EVER.

  14. “My Owner”—cat translator—-“Mine! So back off before I scratch your face off” lol

    1. or her definition of My Owner, = My Personnel…

  15. heh. well I admit there are dumb dogs, but I have never seen a seeing eye cat. If you can train a dog to be your eyes then it must have a decent amount of smarts. but then you DO have those oh-so-stupid little dogs, so I guess its a wash.
