“Can I die?” Keith looked at Zaile seriously. “Because I really hate stories where you die in your dream or simulation and you die in real life.” Keith patted Daeny on the muzzle, without waiting for Zaile to answer. “Hmmm, I think I want Daeny a little smaller.”
“No.” Zaile shook his head. “You’ll just spend a few hours asleep. There are fail safes.”

So you could potentially make a number of mental defenses if you wanted, so long as you were aware they might interact with your mind in unexpected ways..

You might not die directly from the implant, but being unconscious in the “real” (host) world at the wrong time can get you really dead.

You know where those little data sprite people come from? Well they properly started out like Daeny. In fact it wouldn’t surprise me if Daeny became one. (Just for record I call the data Sprites are the little versions of people like conscious versions. Sort of like what the main character had.)
