Day 26 Part 3 Pg 5

Chel began to explain about Lexx and the fact that he would not drink milk and thought foods grown or butchered were disgusting, except fungus.  The entire time she was talking, which was only a couple of minutes, Vic’s face had contorted into an astonishing number of different expressions.  He didn’t appear to be able to decide what reaction to go with until he slid a hand over his face and his body began to shake.  He clenched his jaw, trying not to lose his composure, but it didn’t hold. Vic suddenly burst into uncontrollable laughter.  Chel stared at him for a moment, then picked up another blue pastry.  She took a big bite and chewed slowly, giving her father her best, Please, Dad, you’re embarrassing me.’ look.  He continued laughing as though he couldn’t stop while Maelinn and Chel watched.  Maelinn was completely unsure of what was going on. “You’re telling me, they’ve forgotten how to eat real food?!”  Vic finally managed after a few more minutes of laughing so hard, tears were forming on the corners of his eyes.  Chel and Maelinn continued staring, not sure why it was so funny. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- First of all, text has been updated partly from here.  More will be done over the week, hopefully I finish it by the Wednesday update. Second, the Indiegogo campaign is LIVE. Final amount came out to $5,000. Yeap, it's worth a try to throw out there. There are things to be made and the BIG part of this is devoting 20 hours to Alien Dice ONLY for the next 6 months (also removes more than half the ads, site redesign and other stuff). If it fails, there will be a second chance by splitting it in two and returning to Kickstarter. Indiegogo sadly has a very irritating and buggy interface while setting up campaigns. :P It's nice that it went live immediately, although I had not PLANNED for that for another week, after my convention this weekend. Third, new forum is active and in 'beta' you could say. Fourth, I have a convention this weekend and it's of course Easter... yeah... I wish I'd known it was scheduled OVER Easter, because I would not have gotten a table, which would have additionally saved me grumbling about other 'things' about this convention as well. I'm not happy about it, but making the best of a bad situation and will be making jewelry, buttons and books all week... I have a bunch of My Little Pony FIM cards to DESTROY!!! Much to my daughter's dismay. - Tiff

  1. To be fair it is pretty funny. Makes me wonder what it would be like to take the ones who could eat normally to any earth restaurant.

  2. – (thinks) Would it be unconscionable to disown him at this point? I’m sooo embarrassed!

    – (thinks) Would it be a faux pas to mention our adoption laws? I could be her sister by day’s end! :=)>

  3. – (thinks) Would it be unconscionable to disown him at this point? I’m sooo embarrassed!

    – (thinks) Would it be a faux pas to mention our adoption laws? I could be her sister by day’s end! <3

    – (thinks) Would it cause too much trouble if I killed and butchered something? I need MEAT!

<(=:< (left-handed goat smiley so the angle-brackets don't get interpreted as an illegal HTML tag…)

  4. This is the part where Chel gets up, walks around the table, and DOPE-SLAPS her father for being rude.

    1. Meat Over Manners!

  5. @ The Aussie Bloke
That is a good response on her part.
There are many things that you don’t do during first contact situations. The old man is not being respectful of the aliens. Chel is more curious than anything.

  6. Oh, gods; Chel’s expression in the third panel just killed me. Lol!
Also: Smooth, dad. Reeeal smooth. XD

  7. See the sci-fi short story ‘Good Taste’ where a contestant in a synthetic food cooking contest wins but is disqualified by using actual garlic in the recipe. When the contest judge finds out, he is disgusted that he has eaten something that was grown in the dirt.

  8. As someone with a background in chemistry, I have a slightly different concept of what some terms mean compared to a “normal” person: a “chemical” is any combination of several atoms linked by covalent or ionic bonds, “organic” contains carbon, “natural” is anything not made in a lab, “synthetic” is anything made in a lab, and “real” is anything that actually exists.

The aliens eat real food, it’s just synthetic rather than natural!
As long as it’s healthy, that’s what matters.

    1. Yeah, and you probably get off on telling people just how many KILOcalories are in their food too.

      1. You probably get off on eating dirt because no one dares to tell you it’s not chocolate.

  9. Wow, all the things Vic could of cracked on, it’s the food that does it.

    Smooth Vic, real smooth.

By the by, have I mentioned recently just how awesome a character Vic is? Well…it’s the truth. ^^

  10. “We haven’t exactly had boars heads or roast chickens with the heads still on them on dinner tables for a few centuries either.”

  11. Vic come on it’s not THAT funny … *looses composure and joins Victor in his laughing fit*

  12. Moments like this are why I love Vic.

  13. I totally agree with him on that.

  14. I don’t remember this 🙁 where would I look in the archive to find the last mention of it, does anyone know?

  15. Noooo! You should mail those cards to me! Or at least stick them on ebay. You do know some (most) of those cards can be worth a fair chunk of change? And besides… what ‘cha got against FIM?

    1. I turned them into notebooks and jewelry. 😀

  16. I’d just like to mention I am not amused at his reaction at all, given the benefits of synthetic food done right. Here is the current attempt at it. We’ll see if it holds up long-term.

    1. I would just like to point out that they named their product after something created by processing the corpses of dead people. This does not inspire confidence. In addition, an all liquid diet is most certainly not the most efficient form of food, unless you have a large supply of immodium, or a whole bunch of fiber supplements.

A semisolid or solid food you could add water to would probably be preferable, though that would cost more, of course.

  17. I must confess, I love this Vic moment. I don’t mind artificial food, especially if you can manufacture it in abundance. Heck, I have a much more… lenient palette than most. That said, I love fresh fruits and veggies, meat and fish. My fantastic chili.

Artificial food, I don’t mind at all.

  18. Wasn’the Vic disappointed that he didn’t get to meet more diplomatic aliens?
