Day 26 Part 5 Page 09

Chel snapped her mouth shut, realizing what she was saying too late. Her anger diminished immediately, replaced by a cold creeping embarrassment that ran up her back. She gaped at the dice for a moment, unsure of how to explain away what she had said in the heat of the moment. Stealth slowly stretched, twitching her tails with little hooks at the end in the fashion of an annoyed cat. Then she got up and slowly stalked toward Chel, curiously inquiring, “Who do we belong to, Chel?” The large cat didn’t look angry in the face, but her ears were back and tails still swishing in a way that made Chel uncomfortable.

  1. “Tricky. Let me stroke your mane and backfur, and scratch your ears just the way you like it, while I think of an answer.”

  2. Yeah, if anyone was going to ask Chel this question, it had to be Stealth.

  3. If there is an “I” to ask the question “Who do I belong to?”, then in a very important sense they don’t belong to anyone other than themselves.

  4. I can see Chel getting caught in a catch-22, on one hand if she answers ‘you belong to yourselves’ then Stealth can point out that as sentient beings they have a choice.

On the other if she answers that Stealth belongs to Chel due to her cat being the latest basis for Stealth and the others are sentient beings then she’s also caught worse since Stealth can then drive a harsh truth and say you can’t have it both ways, we either belong to you, since I can’t see the other dice not following each other, or we belong to ourselves in which case scenario 1 applies.

  5. Ah, it’s been a while. Taking a break and coming back to so much comic is nice.

  6. That’s most definitely a tricky question…because it’s not like ‘belong’ just means ‘the person owning you’. It means: ‘The person you are to stay with’. Basically, Stealth just asked: ‘And where do you think our place is?’

The only correct answer in this case, them being sentient and all, would be that they can choose where they want to be…whom they want to belong to.

However I have to wonder…would Chel have the heart to give that answer? Because in the essence, that gives them the option to just leave. Go away forever…and I highly doubt Chel could handle that one easily.

  7. Themselves.

    1. To clarify, I think she’s just a bit peeved that Keith is making plans as if the Dice (Lexx included) can’t make the decision for themselves where to go. It seems to be a common problem with the MIB in this story. Chel knows Lexx and his Dice as living, sentient, emotional creatures. Keith seems to have relegated the non-humanoid Dice, at least, to the category of intelligent pets. Swiftpaw might act like he’s five years old, but it doesn’t mean that Keith and the others can relegate him to a category that discounts the fact he is considerably older (probably) than five years.

    2. Well it’s also possible Swiftpaw is acting this way because that’s what gets him what he wants. He’s only ever really been treated as a ‘pet’ so he plays it up to get treats and attention. His base desires are for food as freedom (isn’t everyone’s?) but I don’t think he realizes in Keith’s care he’d be treated well… But only as a pet…

  8. Well to be fair, one would think intelligent life has rights to be free and enslaved to no other person but themselves.

For the Dice, for the most part, they enjoy their lives. Heck, didn’t Dash and Stealth admit at times they really enjoyed their life’s with their simple pleasures?

For some, the view on Dice would probably be a form of slavery. But to Dice, when it’s all you know and what all you care about or need is provided in abundance, I suppose not being owned would be a scary thing for a Dice.

  9. This is a very difficult question, and “wherever they choose” is not a responsible answer. Some of the dice, Stealth, Sirius and Serenity in particular, might be considered truly sentient (the alliteration is entirely unintentional), but many of them are not, and quite a few are in a grey area where coming up with a defining standard will be a nightmare.

    1. Of course when we talk about Stealth and Sirius being truly Sapient, there talks between themselves on about Chel and the other Dice kind of shows it’s a potentially harmful question to answer even among the big thinkers of Lexx’s Dice.

When Stealth thinks along the path way of Chel is my human from time to time, it can be taken that Dice and humans might have a different look on that subject.

  10. Gah, I always get those mixed up. Sentient above should be sapient.

  11. Don’t answer Chel. Thats a trap!

  12. Duh, “Lexx”.
    Mutually counts, right?
