“Chel,” Lexx waited until he could no longer hear Damian and Keith walking away. “Would you like to walk with me?” He reached up with his right hand, gently running his fingers under her hair, pushing it out of her face. “Down to the pool? I want to talk to you.”
Chel stared up at Lexx, aware that they were completely alone, something that didn’t happen often. The trees nearby were suddenly so easy to hear as their leaves rustled in the gentle ocean breeze. Birds that Chel hadn’t noticed before were noisily calling to one another, and Lexx was standing in front of her, smiling.
“Yes.” The words fell out of her mouth. Whatever Lexx wanted to talk about, it would likely only be talking. They didn’t have a lot of time and Chel didn’t want to pass up time with Lexx, especially not when there was no predicting what was going to happen today.

They’re magic birds. They just show up to try to scream random calls and ruin moments.

You can only focus on one thing at a time and anything in the background is shoveled out of the sphere of attention. There’s no such thing as truemultitasking, even while listening, just the ability to switch from one task to another quickly. Listening, is a task. You can listen to more than one thing and hear them, but I don’t think it’s possible to pay attention to more than one thing at a time. The birds were always there, just like all the other sounds, but they tend to fade into the background as just ‘white noise’, until you actually listen. Chel had automatically tuned them out, because she was focused on what Lexx was saying and nothing else. That noise filled itself in when she stopped focusing on him as strongly. (Making me have to explain a mood setting description with science.)
