"Why would Riley leave?" Maelinn exhaled as though her greatest fears had been released, "He works for-"
"I fired him." Zaile interrupted. "I don't need-"
"ZAILE!!" Maelinn shrieked, darting across the short distance that separated her from her adopted father. "How could you?! I love Riley! How could you send him away?! How could you?!"
"Maelinn …" finally Zaile looked at her, a little unsure of how to react.
"How could you take the one person who makes me happy?!" blurted Maelinn. She was shaking with uncontrolled emotion. It was the first time she had felt afraid and alone.
