Not even a minute had passed since the start of Lexx’s relay conversation with Riley. He had been staring into nothing with a frustrated look on his face, when he became aware of something weird happening. There was a strange brushing and weight that momentarily crossed his legs, then he found himself blinking and looking at orange-red hair. For a second, he didn’t know what was going on.
Chel was attempting to give him a comforting hug without it being awkward and that in itself,… was awkward. Lexx just sat there, frozen in surprise. He wasn’t sure what to do or why Chel was doing this, so he didn’t move. Instead, he felt his body tense and wings involuntarily flex.
There was a problem in hugging someone who had wings. You couldn’t reach around their back. Chel smiled, her eyes closed, waiting for Lexx to say if he wanted her to not do this, but he had looked so sad and distant a moment before, she went for it. It was just a hug.
She slid her hands up behind Lexx’s arms to hug him that way and leaned against his chest. It was just a hug. Chel could hear his heart beating fast and felt the warmth of his skin; the steady rise and fall of his chest as he breathed. And then, tentatively, Lexx lifted his right hand and laid it on her shoulder.
“Thanks.” Lexx whispered, dropping his head to press his face lightly against the side of Chel’s head. For him, the small gesture was worth more than Chel could ever know, or maybe she did. He was trying hard to keep his emotions at a level that they wouldn’t inadvertently pass through her relay. It was hard, but he restrained himself.
“You looked like you needed it.” Chel replied.
It was just a hug.
But it felt really good.

2013! Woo woo! I never even thought of that. For me, it’s just been a few hours well spent not doing homework. For the people who first read this, they had to wait years for ten days and a hug. I look up to them so much.
