“Are you taking me home yet, Daddy?” Maenae suddenly asked, her expression and voice getting insistent. “No.” Lexx found himself not looking directly at her. “I can’t. You’ll have to stay here a few more months.” “Awww,…” Maenae’s voice rose slightly in a soft whine. “I’m tired of here. It’s boring…” She pouted and looked directly at Lexx. Lexx suddenly flinched and looked at Maenae, but wasn’t actually seeing her. ‘Deuce….’ He withdrew to the deeper recesses of his mind to listen to the voice in his head that was painfully demanding his attention. ‘ADC relay.’ These always pinched and gave him a minor headache. They did it to remind those they were speaking to that they had some control over them. ‘Shira Lexx.’ The voice was crisp and to the point. ‘We request your presence in the communications area. It’s two decks down, Section 6, Room 12zq.’ ‘May I ask why?’ Lexx felt a heavy weight return to his shoulders. ‘We need to discuss something in private.’ ‘The relay isn’t private enough?’ Why were THEY contacting him. ‘Report to communications, Lexx.’ There would not be any negotiating on this.
