“You are on a contract –” The contact relayed coldly.
“To play!!” Lexx yelled back, sweeping his wings back and wishing he could reach through thin air and grab one of his tormentors around the neck. “I am playing your game and I will win, then I will be completely free! I will earn my life back from you!” He had held his tongue long enough. Now, he couldn’t stop the flow of words. “I am keeping Chel with me as long as she wants to stay! I have a right to have friends and do whatever I want as long as I do not speak against the game! This is NOT interfering with my work! I am following the rules!”
Silence followed the echo of Lexx’s words. For a moment, he thought the contact had left abruptly. Then, evenly, without a touch of emotion a response came. “Yes, you have done well, but be careful that you do not endanger your ‘friends’, because they become a part of the game when they are with you.”
Lexx stared into the dark, a gnawing sensation growing in his stomach. His throat tightened as the contact continued, “Oh,… and since you refuse our generous offer, we are upgrading our systems on your ship to include full audio at all times. Be careful what you say. We are watching. The upgrades will begin immediately, so you will remain here until we tell you they are complete. You may consider our offer open until we tell you otherwise,… unless you lose.” The contact paused for effect. “Then you’ve fully chosen your fate.”
The stillness of the room was not broken again. The voice faded and Lexx swore to himself. There had been an obvious threat in what the contact had relayed. He would have to watch himself to make sure he didn’t say anything that would be misconstrued. It would be much too easy to do. So far, he hadn’t told Chel everything, more than he had told to anyone else, but nothing that would come back on him.
Lexx leaned against the wall and rubbed the back of his hand across his forehead. He wanted to crumple under the pressure. This was the only way. For the briefest moment, his eyes burned and he wished he was the type of person who really didn’t care about anyone but himself. It would be so much easier, but no matter how much he tried, it just was not in him
