"Figures," grunted Damian. "How disgusting." He slowly walked toward Chel and Lexx. Lisaan reluctantly followed Damian, but remained behind him. "No wonder we had so much fun this morning. Kane's a tease, that wasn't-"
"Damian, shut up!" Lexx shouted. He didn't want to hear another word from Damian, especially when he was certain it involved a comment about his exploits with his sister. Lexx kept his attention on Chel, pushing aside the flood of questions bombarding his mind. From Chel, all he received was shock.
The body of Kane smoldered. Its true form was slowly seeping through in growing patches of green. It wouldn't be able to hold the external features for much longer. In a matter of hours, it would completely disintegrate.
"Deuce!" Riley ground his teeth together staring at the form. He felt weak and sick to his stomach. This had been close. Very close. "This is a mimic!" Terror took hold of Riley's soul. "I know the real Kane is in custody. This is not a good sign."
Mimics; silicon based life forms that could change their form into anything imaginable. They were few in number and very dangerous when dispatched. A single mimic could wipe out entire populations of people before they were discovered and they took delight in it. Riley hoped and whispered a silent prayer that there were not more of them on the island. If there were, more than Chel might be in danger.
