Lexx’s left eyelid twitched.
And then, Lexx’s blood ran cold. Someone very light was running down the hall that led to the balcony. Every instinct pushed him to run to the door and block it. But his body wouldn’t respond. He just stood there.
“Daddy! Daddy!” Maenae darted around the corner and joined them. She was dressed in a cheery golden outfit that complemented her dark skin and shiny brown hair. She also had a garland of shiny bobbles bouncing in her hair. In her hands, she held a blue ball with stars scattered over it.
No! Lexx shouted repeatedly in his head.

If Chel’s mom had been there this would have been a great thing to happen. Dads tend to react poorly when they find out a guy is a single parent.
