Day 25 Part 1 Page 2

“Maybe you should tell Lexx,” suggested Sirius after a moment. “No,”  Stealth shook her head slowly.  “I doubt he would believe us and the last thing he needs is to doubt his sanity.” “Perhaps Riley should know.”  Serenity suggested timidly. “Riley would ignore us,” Stealth’s ears flipped back and her brow furrowed with numerous rows of annoyed wrinkles.  “He doesn’t believe what we have to say is important.”   ---------------------------------------------- I had a little issue with my computer on Saturday, that ended up with me wiping it back to manufacturer specs so I could use photoshop. 9.9  Thus.. no text.. and you're lucky to get updates at all.   I'm not sure if there will be updates or not next week, it depends on if the goal is met today.  It has $50 to go to get the M-F updates for one more week.  I'm working on books next week instead of comics at the moment, but I can change that to get those extra two pages done. - Tiff

  1. I think Stealth just wants to have the satisfaction of leaving Riley in the dark. I don’t think she thinks he’ll do anything useful.

  2. I hope your computer gets better soon. Also: books are good!

  3. Come on rich people, donate! 😀 And by rich people I mean those with a job who aren’t poor college students.

    1. I’m still working on updates for next week. 😀 Seriously… one person is responsible for the goal tally being as high as it was this month. Everyone should thank that one person, because we wouldn’t have had any food earlier this month. 😀

      1. A hefty thanks to them.

Tiff take a week off if ya need to, just don’t lose your computer; you need it for more than just showing your skills to us mindless masses.

        1. *laugh* I wonder how many people realize that I really enjoy working and keeping busy. 🙂 I do have a book coming out to REAL bookstores soon and am hoping that picks up the slack of the horrid economy. Selling to housewives who can afford to buy a book I couldn’t afford to buy for my own daughter. :/ Of course, I haven’t been able to afford to even buy mangas for three years for myself – luckily I’m gifted large batches of them from several people every year. 🙂
Entertainment is sadly, not all that important right now – even cheap entertainment, when the alternative is free.

    2. Unfortunately, that seems to be Obama’s definition of “rich” also.

      1. *sigh* Yes… if you can afford to work for yourself, you can afford more taxes. I don’t have time to protest – I have to work to pay twice the taxes. 🙁

I kind of feel like the perceived 1% at times when they want more taxes and I know they’ll ding small business. :/ I feel for the college students who really worked for their educations to find jobs – but not so much for the ones who THINK they worked for their educations. There’s a difference. Now, I’m going to go take my daughter out to trick or treat in a ‘rich’ neighborhood since apartment dwellers don’t do trick or treats. I think I’ll leave this convo – it’s depressing. I just want to pay my bills, not be rich, and if I’m ever rich, I darn well will help others in similar predicaments. I did it when I wasn’t rich and it’s a bit sad to not even be able to do a minimum now. I’ll hold out to see what sales do. 🙂 I’m hoping this time I’ll get a breakthrough and even if I don’t, I’m not abandoning the story.

  4. I always hate having to rebuild a PC when in the middle of doing something. Interrupts of whatever workflow you’ve got going, and it always takes a bit to get back in the groove (after you’ve sorted out the computer troubles, of course). You have my sympathy.

Have you tried writing an image of your tablet when you get it in a workable condition? Then, if you have troubles, you could just re-image it off of the known-good image. With regular backups of your files to an external storage drive (e.g. USB, NAS, Cloud, etc.) you should never lose much work. Re-imaging a computer is supposed to take much less effort than rebuilding it from a nuked state, but I’m not entirely sure on how to image an rebuild a machine from an image (I’ve never done it, was more into doing a regular nuke&pave). I can ask one of my friends who re-images his personal machine every month or so to find out though.

    1. It’s damn easy. Boot the CD/DVD; Start the copying; Go find something to do for an hour; Return and reboot to your old system! Of course, this is assuming that the entire image fits on a single CD/DVD or you kept the copy on an 2nd partition/hard drive. A lot of image tools will allow you to only store the used sectors to save a lot of disc swapping. They shouldn’t let you overwrite the same partition that contains the image file but… be very sure you chose the right one.

You just have to be aware that you lose EVERYTHING from after the image was taken. There’s a reason there’s a backup tool called “Time Warp” or something similar. It’s a good excuse to use an external drive and DVDs for your personal data, hehe. Actually, I’ve found that most people can use the same 2GB USB keychain drive for years if they’re not creating/storing huge stuff like multimedia content. When I was in school we were told to save two copies of important stuff on at least 2 of either network share (personal folder they give you), our own computer, or USB when leaving for the day. I used to use email to save a copy to transfer to school and back, back before I bought a USB drive. I don’t know how many times that saved my bacon!

There is a way to partition your drive into an OS and data section that are separate. That way, you only restore over the OS. Getting those mixed up would obviously be a disaster though! It’s much safer to use an external drive such a 4GB USB and write backups to DVD. However, I do use disk images of just the OS and it does work. Just something out there for those that didn’t know you didn’t have to do the whole physical drive all at once.

Found a link – Time Machine and it’s for a Mac but it’s not like only Macs have disk imaging tools. This is offsite but it’s the same idea as backing up to a DVD. Corporations are more likely to want something like this in case of a hurricane taking out both local backups? It’s just convenient if you’re the type who can afford the fees and has the connection speed to use it. Sadly that’s probably not a lot of us in here anymore. Luckily, there’s free alternatives that don’t make you use the Internet! 😉 Here it is:

Wikipedia has a sort of short introduction to this process for those unfamiliar with full disk backups.

I prefer Trinity Rescue Kit but you can use any of those imaging tools that come with a boot CD. I just use this one because of the free virus scanning and rootkit detection. The bad part is that it’s mostly command line so if you hate that, I’ll have to find another that isn’t so arcane. Those of course are mostly the ones you pay for, haha. You pay the price for convenience, not power or flexibility!

      Hint: BSD/GPL means free. 😛

Haven’t tried this yet but it has a graphical interface on the boot CD:

It seems to work with almost any OS that is being backed up and doesn’t store unused sectors. It also makes and uses compressed files so you have to do less disc swaps. You’ll get really tired of “Please insert next disc” as it is. Meh, now you know why I bothered with breaking my hard drive into partitions. It’s a pain and risky to do it after installing the OS so… darn if you did that already. D’oh. Resizing partitions is very risky especially if you have a power failure. Just a warning to only do it on one that you can get back. You know – you made an image of it? 😉

  5. I’ve noticed that chell is the only one who doesn’t treat the dice like they are inferior

    1. Yeah, the aliens treat them as if they’re decoration, and Chel needs to be reminded that they’re NOT sentient

      1. Define sentient.

        Still waiting.

That’s because it’s pretty much impossible. Although it is very obvious that there’s a minimum amount of intelligence involved. Again, we see that since the appearance of intelligence is subjective, that the aliens see things very differently than her. Stealth is showing very sentient behaviour. The fact that she knows that people will ignore her tells you something. Inference! 😉

  6. Blasted computer, i’m glad its doing better now though.
The kitten you’ve found is so beautiful! I did some searching and it looks like your pretty feral kitty might be of the Ragdoll breed. Um just a warning though, if shes too feral they may not take her. But if you say shes a Ragdoll that might help because people snap up rare breeds quickly from the SPCA.

  7. Serenity’s face in panel two is very pretty, with her ears forward it would be even more so (I do understand that she’s showing submission). Most animals (particularly mammals) do have varying degrees of sentience, although in the dice it’s obviously artificially enhanced.

    1. It is thought by some that one of the biggest differences between humans and most other life is the existance of a sort of “machine intelligence” that makes decisions. This is probably at least partially because it’s easier to detect differences if an animal can do arithmatic. Our level of intuition is harder to compare to animals though so I’m not sure if anyone’s ever been able to do conclusive studies other than the obvious block-sorting kind which is more logic and shape-recognition(like reading) than intuition. It’s pretty telling for both of these that standardized tests are pretty much useless after people learn how to take the tests. Not to mention that some people just don’t test very well even if very smart.
