Day 26 Part 2 Page 5

“Do you want me to lie to him like everyone else?” Vic’s face immediately changed to a more serious expression. “He’s emotionally a ten year old as far as I can see. For all his ability and power, he’s as fragile as a child and you know it. That’s why you and his friends think you need to protect him so much.” Chel frowned, feeling the sudden need to blink and her face burn at what her father was saying. She turned away and wiped at her eyes. Victor was right. That’s what she wanted to do. Only not like Damian, Riley or Claudia. She didn’t like the thought of being lumped in with those three. As helpful as Riley was, he did lie to Lexx. Damian and Claudia did things without even taking Lexx’s opinions into consideration. She wasn’t like them, right? She listened. She listened and she wanted to protect Lexx in other ways. Thinking back, there were times she had treated him like a child. Not like the others, but in her own way. She wanted to take care of him and protect him on Earth … and keep him her little secret if it had worked out that way. But it hadn’t. There were far more important things to be considered now.

  1. Boo!

I’m emotionally a 12 year old though I’m 35 and I can take care of myself just fine, thank you.

This is the kind of attitude that I never understood in people. There are all kinds of maturity (some of them come from abuse very quickly and at a young age) and from what I can tell from the character, Lexx is more mature than just about anyone else in the cast, with the possible exception of the soul echo. Sadly, also the most damaged inside.

    1. True, but Lexx does have some severe emotional instability because nothing in his life has been stable until now. It will take time for him to realize that he’s with people who won’t leave him on a whim or wright him off because of a flaw or two.

      1. So do I.

        I think you mean “write”.

If you are trying to say her father is saying that Lexx is “damaged goods” as if that is a good reason to stay away, people like you make me sick. (correction: sicker, disabled, heard the damaged goods excuse too many times myself).

        1. Nah, I think he;s just saying that Lexx’s instability is completely understandable, and should work itself out and/or lessen in severity as he gets used to the new conditions/acquaintances around him. Not saying that he;s not an awesome guy with the instability and all, but everyone – most of all Lexx – would certainly feel better with some more predictability in his moods (though he will, of course, always be somewhat moody, if his other resemblances to his mother are any indication xD ).

    2. I disagree strongly that Lexx is the most mature character in the cast. If anything, I would say he’s one of the least mature. It’s not his fault, but the fact is he is not really capable of managing complex relationships right now. We’ve seen numerous examples where he’s reacted to basic kindness with distrust and outright panic. It’s not his fault, but it’s still a problem. Lexx definitely has strengths as well as weaknesses – he’s got a strong sense of ethics and he’s obviously a capable adult. But he’s never been allowed to be part of society – since a young age, he’s been deliberately kept apart. That inexperience shows, painfully.

While you might be young at heart, I’m willing to bet that your ability to deal with relationships is much better than any twelve year old’s. As you stated, you are capable of taking care of yourself. Lexx really isn’t. Even when he was ‘alone’, he had other people looking out for him (unfortunately, the ADC was one of those ‘people’). It has been pointed out multiple times in the comic that Lexx has no idea what to do with himself outside of the game. All the social education a normal person receives has been replaced with training for the game, and as a result it’s practically all Lexx knows. Calling him a ‘ten year old’ might be demeaning, but it’s also tragically accurate – he’s like a grown-up child soldier. Vic’s point appears to be that the people around Lexx are damning him with good intentions – they’re trying to protect Lexx but in the process they are preventing him from acquiring the necessary skills to be an adult.

      1. let’s just say that my own life mimics those conditions far more than I am willing to put down here.

      2. Thumbs up, Sabreur.

      3. Perfectly said.

  2. Boo, Vic. Boo for judging Lexx by human cultural standards. Boo for presuming your daughter’s motives. Dick move, Dad.

    1. For starters, Lexx *is* human, and Vic’s judgement appears to be spot-on so far. As for presuming Chel’s motives… well, he appears to be spot-on there, too. Can’t really blame the guy for being right.

      1. Culture is not biological. He may be human, but he was not raised in Vic’s society. It’s inappropriate to assume that your own cultural markers and standards apply (even psychology, for all of its scientific leanings, does have a degree of cultural bias). Vic’s judgement is “spot on” if you accept his base presumptions as true. I don’t…there is too much that Vic doesn’t know, for all he does know, about the groups with which he’s presently dealing.

  3. You’ll have to wait for the rest of the conversation before you know what he’s actually ‘saying’.

  4. Am I the only one who thinks Vic has a point? He’s telling his daughter that is she loves Lex she can’t hold anything back with him, because he’s been babied too much. Everyone hides things from him to keep him ‘safe’ but we’ve all seen the results of that. Vic’s trying to be a real person to Lex. If anything we should be applauding him! He’s one of the few that have treated Lex like a normal person. It’s time for Lex to know EVERYTHING that’s going on, not just what he ‘needs to know now’.
So, yeah, hope that made sense. 🙂

    1. No, you’re not. Vic’s not finished speaking, but he’s already got a good point.

He’s honest with Lexx. Everybody else has been lying to Lexx to protect him, and it’s gotten Lexx hurt.

He is also honest with Chel, and he’s not keeping his opinions and observations from her either.

Vic is actually my current favorite character in Alien Dice for his levelheaded and honest approach to both parenting and to running an alien contact agency.

    2. Not alone by a long shot. Lexx’s fragility has been a running theme, and I think Vic has a point here questioning their methods in dealing with that fragility. He has a unique outsider’s perspective here that could be very valuable.

    3. Also perfectly stated, all three of you guys 🙂
