Day 27 4 09

“There are a few outside the system, but not many.”  Chel mentally went down the list.  It was a short list and none of them would have any reason to go after Lexx, even if they were offered money. “We don’t do our jobs for the pay.”  Keith beamed proudly. “We do it because it’s awesome.” “Working for people who want to trap Lexx?”  Chel raised an eyebrow in Keith’s direction. “That’s not standard policy, Chel, I swear.”  Keith waved his hands in the air, deflecting the accusation. Lexx sighed at the two humans and all this new information they were giving him.  There was some threat there, but it didn’t seem to be anything he couldn’t handle simply by leaving the area.  If he didn’t have to fight, he didn’t want to. “They can’t hold me.”  Lexx smiled. “Please don’t give them an opportunity to try to, Lexx.”  Chel gave him a worried look that bordered on frustration.  She was more worried for Lexx than he was. “I don’t intend to.”  Lexx shrugged, his smile widening. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The few outside the system... those are the ones I have the most notes on and they bounce around in my head.   It was nice to at least let them get mentioned, but now they'll all go back in the box, except for one, who did not agree with me.  Speaking of misbehaving characters, Chel's mother is a brat. - Tiff

  1. Tiff is that a hint that we will be seeing more of Chel’s mom soon? ^_^

  2. So Chell’s mom is being a brat about more comic time….she being worse than your little one when she’s cranky?

  3. Not standard policy? After rereading this comic, I would like to point out some shortcomings the ERA has.

    1. Poor firearms training: It really is sad when a nineteen year old girl and a touchy feely kind of guy show better judgement with firearms than your elite government shadow agency. Not even joking. Chel did things right, for the most part. Lexx was rising, and he was a threat. Letting him get to his feet would have been too risky for someone who broke into her house and approached her while she slept. And Damien blew the head off that mimic. It was a risky shot, but risking the short was better than letting Chel die for certain.

Now let’s look at the times where the ERA has fired their weapons.

    A) Shooting a fleeing suspect.
    B) Shooting a suspect making no aggressive movements and carrying a in innocent bystander.

Both times, they were shot from behind, while displaying no threat.

    2. Lax discipline: Victor said that the guy who shot an unarmed, fleeing suspect was reprimanded. Even in the federal government, attempted murder does not get a reprimand. It gets you jail time. No indication that he even lost his clearance to carry a sidearm. This is the kind of thing that, at very, very, extreme minimum, should warrant taking him off active duty until he can prove better judgement.

The second case is firing warning shots at a suspect who is precariously carrying an unarmed civilian. In a city. I should not need to explain just how incompetent this is, but I will. Firing any weapon as a warning shot is unconscionable in a law enforcement or federal enforcement situation. I suppose you could argue that from their point of view, apprehending Lexx was worth risking killing him and the civilian, a calculated risk.

I would counter argue that it is a terrible policy to fire warning shots in a busy city! Day one of any firearms safety course tells you to hold your fire if there is a risk of hitting anyone. They were playing russian roulette with civilians, because it was dark, they couldn’t see, and apparently nobody in the ERA has ever heard of less than lethal munitions.

I understand that you don’t know the abilities and threat level of aliens, but your first act after telling them to stop is not to shoot to kill. That’s KGB policy. It should not be the policy of the guys trying to establish first contact. And Vic wondered why nobody made contact with Earth yet. All our diplomats are violent idiots!

    3. Blackmail: I understand that the ERA has to operate under the radar. However, threatening to send commandos to invade an island where Lexx just wants to be left alone if Chel does not cooperate is very, very illegal. Lexx would be well within his rights to kill those commandos and send their heads back to the ERA on pikes as a warning.

Lexx could stand to be a little more firm, but I think with his comment above, he understands he may have to let them know it would be a very bad idea to try and capture him.

But you know what? I don’t blame you at all, Tiff. Someone has to hold the idiot ball. If they were too competent, they would have tasered Riley and Lexx, and had two space worthy ships already. I get that they can’t be too competent or the story wouldn’t work, so I have a theory. They have so little money that they can’t afford any really competent agents. Even Vic makes comments that are absolutely unprofessional.

No properly run organization would ever let Vic handle Lexx. He is personally and emotionally involved.
