“No.” Lexx turned back to face Maenae, keeping his expression neutral. “Not if I can help it.”
Maenae stared at Lexx, her dark eyes shifting with a milky gold light. Her face scrunched up momentarily, then she began in a high, whining tone, “I don’t want you to leave. I want you to stay.”
“I will do my best.” Lexx ruffled Maenae’s hair, looking at her eye to eye to prove his intent. It did little to sooth Maenae. She sniffled and pouted at Lexx, which had little effect on him.
