It was Chel who broke the silence. “You have a woman living in your head?” She turned to Lexx and gave him a questioning look. She was the only one who had no idea what she was really seeing other than a ghost of the dice player Lexx had killed in battle. “No.” Lexx shook his head sadly. “A Soul Echo is nothing but memories. Rishan women have been rumored to drive men they are angry with insane by such transference.” “I’ve never heard of a positive soul echo.” Riley stated in true awe. “Astounding.” Zaile exhaled as though he had been holding his breath for several minutes. ----------------------------------------------------- Happy things are good things. Many happy things. Despite that horrible issue, things are good. Granted it's 10:15PM, Sunday evening and I'm watching Limitless and typing up AD text. Sadly.. this is why there might be some typos. :( I apologize if there are any, but I'm kinda tired. - Tiff

  1. Well, there’s a first time for everything. And whose to say that her greatest vengeance wouldn’t be keeping Lexx stable and sane?

  2. “Rishan women have been rumored to drive men they are angry with insane by such transference.”

I’m sorry, but I just can’t figure out how to read this… it’s not making sense. ‘drive men’? drive men insane makes sense but then you say ‘they are angry’. So, can you explain, or someone else explain.
I got the just of it after Riley said he didn’t know soul echos could be positive, but I’d like to understand better. Thanks.

    1. From what I understand, Rishan can interact in the minds with such memories downloaded from the women and inherited from the father.

Think of it this way, Riane is compiled into that form from her downloaded memories and probably can share them with Lexx if she wanted. But she was playing a very dangerous game controlling certain mental aspects of Lexx to offset the harm being done by the BC.

If a Soul echo has that type of control over someones mind and has such a stable sense of self after being downloaded from a woman Rishan. Then it isn’t hard to imagine what kind of damage a soul echo can do if the previous women held a grudge against the person. Heck, to a degree the bad code was acting very much like a soul echo and look at all the damage it did and tried to get away with.

      1. It’s “men that the women are angry with”, as opposed to “men in general”.

    2. I think the author mentioned earlier in the notes that it’s a form of revenge. If someone murders you, you leave behind a soul echo that drives them insane. Since Riane *wanted* to die, from her perspective Lexx did her a favor. So her soul echo works to help Lexx and keep him stable instead of driving him mad.

      1. The key thing to remember is that the Female soul echo acts upon the last intentions of it’s originator at time of loading up into someone.

The male soul echo is suppose to help irregardless of things and is inhereted at birth.

    3. It takes a bit of association:
“Rishan women have been rumored to drive men, (that) they are angry with, insane by such transference.”
The part “they are angry with” is a qualification of the direct object of men. The sentence reads fine without it as well, but then we’re left to wonder what sort of people these women are.

So the question remains: could Rishan women, who are not angry at the target man, use such a transference to help them? Obviously it’s not common but seems to be a positive effect in this case.

    4. I think Lexx is very tired and starting to verbally trip over his own words.

Or maybe Tiff was tired and it’s a typo. Either one works.

    5. @Dawn Star,
The angry ones are the women and the women use the soul echo to drive men insane.

    6. My inner editor also had to read that sentence a couple times. I’d try “Angrered (wc:Rejected?) Rishan women are rumored to drive men insane by such transference.”

  3. Soul Echoes are a very interesting concept when you think about how they work, the differences between the female and male ones and how it effects the story.

Though I am a little curious about how the Rishan returned to earth because they looked human would effect the earths population. Would certain unnoticed Rishan traits work their way into the human population given time?

    1. That is entirely dependent on how many children the had, how many children those children had with how far they managed to ‘spread out’ from their parents, and repeat for each generation. Basically, so long as each generation has more children than were in the previous generation, and they spread out enough each generation to avoid hooking up with distant relatives, then yes, some of the Rishan traits would spread through the human population. It is extremely unlikely however.
