“Sadly … we’re smart enough to ask such things and it’s a burden we should not have.” Serenity tilted her head back and forth as she spoke, focusing more on the timid Swiftpaw than the more stable Dash. They understood what she was getting at. They had an understanding now that they would never have experienced as the animals they had originated as. Every creature they had bonded with had that same kind of lack in understanding of the world around them. They feared simple things and took simple pleasures. They rarely worried past the moment and did only what instinct told them.
They still had their instincts and memories … and they also had the choice to go with their instincts or against them as they reasoned which was the better option at the time. As much as any of them longed for their original simplicity, they knew they were in a better position in life with their knowledge as it was.
“I do not miss … before.” Dash growled softly as he and Swiftpaw stood.
“Sirius and I were going to be farmed for our pelts … if Lexx had not chosen us.” Serenity stated. “I remember hearing the words, but did not understand them at the time.” Brief flashes and snatches of words spoken when she was a kit amongst a mass of rolling and playing fat round kits passed before her mind’s eye. The entire lot of them were nearing a point where they would have been too old to be bonded to dice or sold as pets. Their only use at that point was for their thick, soft pelts. “Now I know that what we would have faced would have been far worse of a fate than this one.”

And I just realized somethin’: Everyone is calling Sirius…well, Sirius. Even the dice. I half expected that to be a name only Chel used, because everyone’s known him as Energy so long.

I believe Serenity is talking about the times before they got bonded to anything – and before Sirius’ look got changed to that of a dog.

He was a Basset Hound, but she’s talking about the alien animals the dice were bound to originally, I think.

I think she’s referring to previous forms the dice bonded to, and yuck, ick, bleargh.

Waitaminute. When Serenity mentions, “…if Lexx had not chosen us,” is he/she referring to the time they became dice when he came to Earth?
If so, doesn’t that contradict what he said in panel 1:

He makes no mention that he chose where the dice would “bond”. Am I missing something?

Sirius was origninally something like a bloodhound, iirc.

He was a basset hound wasn’t he? I don’t think I’ve heard of people skinning a basset hound for it’s skin before.

Dice are recyclable up to three times. They retain the memories of their previous incarnations. This is Lexx’s third set. They’re referring to the original choices of critters to bond, which likely would have been made at the ADC academy.

I thought Serenity was Damian’s dice. Did I miss something? And all of Lexx’s dice were once other species then what they started with on Earth. Maybe fuzzy dragon pelts are all the rage on a far away planet…

I think his original form was the creature that was going to be skinned.
I actually want to see what Serenity looks like once she’s rolled a couple of sides. Right now she still looks a lot like the animal she took the form of on earth.

I’ve followed this story for a long time, and i’ve loved every second of it. I can only imagine the look of rage on Lexx’x fae when he sees the scar on Chel’s hand.
Has anyone else thought that this would make a good MMO?

ok i’ve only reacently came into the story but this is how i understand it so far:
lex chose male and female animals for his base set that were ansestors of earth speicies. i’m guessing they had gotten picked up when the original rishan human eggs were as a ‘pet project’
and when the dice are first bonded to species on a planet their lower lvls look more like the animal they bonded with and as they roll they look more like what they origionaly did but probibly keeping traits of the previous animals as well. (which is why Sirius may have a jelly look as his lvl 1)
not sure if i’m correct but this is how i understand it
