No! No! Not… again!

Lexx steeled himself, clenching his jaw and sliding a step back in the grass. Dust rose around him, broken stalks crunching beneath his feet. Tairin approached, her hands balled into fists and eyes set upon him with intent.

Light flooded Lexx’s view, Pyre streaking out of the sky with an ear-splitting streak. Golden-green sparks flew through the air, a translucent shield obscuring Tairin’s form. Pyre slammed into the shield, scrabbling at it with his claws. More sparks flew as Tairin swore at the dice.

There was no shame in running, and Lexx spun, his boots sliding over the thick blades of grass. To continue fighting was a choice. With no reason to continue fighting, and no reward for the risk, he had choices.

Choices Tairin didn’t have.
